Steam disk write error windows 101/6/2024 ![]() ![]() So I'm right now doing an experiment and I'd like to ask you to try it too. ![]() ![]() The buggy downloader (because, again, you are correct and Iceira is wrong) seems to assume fast disk I/O - I think you don't see this on a local drive because the file descriptors are removed on fclose() quickly enough that downloader never hits the limit. The mention of "errno 24" in the OP's ticket means the Steam downloader is holding onto an excessive number of file descriptors, and eventually hits an OS limit on file descriptors and errors out. Here's their error report, complete with a paste from the logs that looks very similar to the ones from my own log files: Valve's ticket tracker for the Steam client on Linux shows exactly what is happening, complete with a diagnosis of why these write errors are happening. Iceira's Dunning-Kruger effect is hilarious to see and watching them trying to explain something they do not understand has provided me a lot of amusement today. Nyooooom, I am here to report that you are absolutely, unconditionally, 100% correct in your assessment. I'm genuinely out of ideas, the only possible explanation i have is that Steam just straight up doesn't fully support network shared drives, which would be extremely anticonsumer since the Steam Deck is coming out and the most expensive option only has a measly 512GB, barely enough for a dozen games, and pretty much REQUIRING a network shared drive if you want a bigger library without having to connect it to a dock, so i really doubt it. Steam is the only program having issues with this. Running as admin doesn't work because it makes the network shared drive invisible to steam.Flashing a new BIOS on every pc in my house.Wiping the ssd and clean reinstalling 4 different versions of windows 10 on every pc in my house. If i press resume it "fixes" itself and keeps going for another few GB's before saying "Disk Write Error" again. If i try to download any game, it stops every few GB's and says "Disk Write Error". I'm using a laptop and i'm trying to use a 4tb drive from a mini desktop pc connected to the network. ![]()
